AI search is here: a guide to LLM SEO for schools, bootcamps & universities (2026)

Updated

Short answer: to show up in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Mode, your institution needs content that directly answers students' questions, structured data (schema.org), a website that AI crawlers can read and a presence on trusted third-party sources. An llms.txt file is a cheap extra, but no major AI search engine has confirmed it uses one yet.

AI search is changing how students find you

Students don't just "google" anymore. They ask AI things like:

"Which digital marketing master's in Madrid has the best employment rate?"
"Which data science bootcamps can I take online from Europe?"

And AI doesn't return ten blue links: it answers and recommends. The data backs it up:

  • 46% of US high school students used AI in their college search, up from 26% a year earlier; 18% ruled out a school because of what AI told them (EAB, 2026)
  • Nearly half of UK applicants use AI to explore study options (UCAS, 2025)
  • 54% of prospective international students used or planned to use generative AI to choose an institution (IDP, 2025)

In Spain, Google launched AI Overviews in March 2025 and AI Mode in October 2025. If your institution doesn't show up in those answers, for many applicants it doesn't exist. This is called LLM SEO or GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).

What changes compared with classic SEO

Classic SEO doesn't go away: AI search engines rely on search indexes, so a fast, crawlable website with quality links is still the foundation. What changes is how sources get picked for citation:

  • AI extracts specific passages, not whole pages: content that answers in one or two clear sentences wins
  • Authority and consistency matter: your website, your Google Business Profile and third-party sources should all say the same thing
  • Freshness counts: keep prices, dates and deadlines up to date

How to prepare your institution's website for AI search

1. Answer students' real questions

Every program page should answer, in text and not just in a PDF:

  • Total price and payment options
  • Duration, format and schedule
  • Entry requirements and deadlines
  • Career outcomes and employment data, with the source

Start each section with the direct answer and add detail afterwards. Example:

Question: What's the difference between the UX bootcamp and the Product Design master's?

Answer: The bootcamp takes 12 weeks and is focused on getting a job; the master's lasts an academic year and includes research and a final project.

2. Use structured data

Mark up your site with Organization (or CollegeOrUniversity / EducationalOrganization), Course for each program and FAQPage for FAQs. They help Google and AI systems understand unambiguously who you are, what you offer and at what price.

3. Let in the AI crawlers you care about

Review your robots.txt. Each AI company uses different crawlers for model training and for search:

CompanyCrawlerPurpose
OpenAIOAI-SearchBotChatGPT search index
OpenAIGPTBotModel training
AnthropicClaude-SearchBotClaude search quality
AnthropicClaudeBotModel training
PerplexityPerplexityBotPerplexity search results
GoogleGoogle-ExtendedControl token (not a crawler) for use in Gemini; doesn't affect Google Search ranking

If you block the search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot), your institution is less likely to be cited. Blocking the training crawlers is a separate decision.

4. Create an /llms.txt file (without expecting miracles)

llms.txt is a proposal to place a Markdown summary at the root of your website with who you are and links to your key pages. It's easy to maintain, but know where it stands: in 2025 Google's John Mueller said no AI system uses it, and OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity haven't confirmed reading it. Treat it as a small bet on the future, not a substitute for the steps above.

Example:

# Future University
> Future University offers on-campus and online programs in Business, Design and Technology.

## Programs
- [MBA in Digital Business](https://futureuniversity.com/programs/mba): price, requirements and outcomes
- [UX Design Bootcamp](https://futureuniversity.com/programs/ux): duration, outcomes and admission

## Admissions
- [How to apply](https://futureuniversity.com/admissions): steps and key dates

5. Get others talking about you

LLMs trust what third parties say: rankings, press, program directories, forums and reviews. Keep your information consistent across all of them.

6. Track what AI says about your institution

Every month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode the questions your applicants would ask, and note whether you appear, how you're described and which source is cited.

And when the student arrives, reply right away

AI search brings better-informed applicants with stronger intent. If they then request information and nobody replies for hours, the effort is wasted. At ReshapeOS we build AI voice, WhatsApp and web chat agents that call or message every new lead within seconds, answer their questions and book the admissions interview.

Frequently asked questions

What is LLM SEO or GEO?

It's optimizing your content so AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Mode understand it, cite it and recommend your institution in their answers.

Does an llms.txt file do anything?

Its effect is unproven today: Google has said no AI system uses it, and neither OpenAI, Anthropic nor Perplexity has confirmed reading it. It's cheap to create, but content, structured data and crawler access matter far more.

Should I block GPTBot on my website?

It depends. GPTBot is only used to train models; to appear in ChatGPT search, what matters is not blocking OAI-SearchBot.

Is there data on how many students use AI to choose an institution?

Yes. EAB (2026) puts it at 46% of US high school students in their college search, UCAS reports nearly half in the UK and IDP 54% among international students.
